Owl Noir

I wanted to do something a little more conceptual. Here is what I came up with.

Black Friday at the Dog Park

Instead of shopping today I went out to the off-leash dog park in South Minneapolis to see if the Barred Owl could be found. Here are a couple of shots from today.

Badlands (Day 3)

I was up before the sun with an eye on taking some early morning landscape shots. The Big Horn Sheep are not yet in the rut, but they appear to be gathering. I think I’m going to miss it by a week.

Badlands/Custer (Day 2)

The highlight from today was being able to photograph Mule Deer. Here are a few shots including some of rutting behavor.

Consort of Owls – Video

I have just updated my owl video to include photos and live video from the past year. Enjoy!!

Bugling Elk – Yellowstone

Here is a photograph and video taken at Yellowstone National Park during a recent visit.

Northshore Dragonflies

We traveled north of Two Harbors yesterday and ran into a multitude of dragonflies near the lighthouse, along the shore of Lake Superior. It was my first attempt at photographing this species of  insect. We hoped to see one land on a moose or black bear, but no luck.

Shape Shifting Owls

I always marvel at the different looks that owls display.  The owl’s feathers allow for significant shape shifting as demonstrated in the following pictures, all of the same individual.

The first photograph is more of a classic look. The second is the bird’s best audition for Pirates of the Caribbean. And, then a series showing the owl in a full stretch.

Weekend Update

Great weather this weekend. The skies were clear with full sunlight. I went out with a plan to locate the juvenile owl. I was surprised when it flush from a tree and flew directly above me. It flew into a linden tree where it became completely obscured in the full canopy. The female owl was in the next tree over watching over the happenings. The male adult was also close, high in a tree about fifty feet away. Here are some shots of the female.

House Finch (Sequence)

Just for fun, I am adding a picture which is a composite of three images taken today showing a House Finch taking off.
